Description
Primitive Rustic Knotty Pine Dresser, Mirror & Night Stand 1930s knotty pine rustic and primitive, antique pine Bedroom Set - Dresser, Nightstand and Mirror, in oil rubbed finish. Made by Habitant Shops of Bay City Michigan. Solid knotty pine wood with solid brass door-knocker type hardware. Has straight modern lines, so it will compliment any décor—from rustic cabin to farmhouse to contemporary mid century modern. Has been in my family since 1945. I really hate parting with the set, but I just can’t take it with me. If posting is up, it is still available; no need to ask! I will remove the listing once it is sold. If you are interested, here is Habitant Shops Furniture background: Newell A. Eddy Jr., a Yale graduate, came from a well-to-do family with roots in the lumber industry. Eddy's interest, however, was in the potential for tourist trade, leading him to build Presque Isle Lodge north of Alpena in 1920. As the new resort was being finished, Eddy considered his options for furnishings and found nothing that would match the rustic style he had selected. So he decided to make his own: "With several of the same patient, expert craftsmen who had helped me build the Lodge, I began the construction of early American furniture. We kept reference books constantly before us in our workshop to ensure close adherence to authentic styles. We worked hard, and we worked long. We built tables, chairs, dressers, beds, and settees--we even built mirrors, lamps, bookshelves, and numerous other accessory pieces to complete the entire Lodge furnishings.... When it was finished and installed, our furniture met with the instant approval of the guests. During the first summer of 1920 and the summers following, the ... furnishings not only drew our customers' praise but also elicited orders from many who wanted Knotty Pine furniture for their own homes." Eddy began filling orders from a small workshop behind the lodge. But in 1924, he trademarked the name Habitant, a word referring to early French settlers in Canada, with bigger goals in mind. By 1930, the company advertised that it would create custom designs from any simple sketch that might be provided. One of Habitant's most popular designs was a solid knotty-pine wingback chair that closely resembled 18th-century New England fireside seating. During the 1930s, Eddy ended handcrafted production at the resort and moved the business into a Bay City factory. For the next 30 years, the company's advertisements continued to promote the designs that the owner first envisioned and emphasized that its offerings had an "early American pine finish," which was made to last. When the company closed its doors in the 1960s, Habitant had been distributed throughout the United States and was widely found in commercial resorts, country clubs, hotels, and restaurants.
