Description
This elegant high yoke back armchair, commonly known as an “official’s hat chair,” is an example of traditional Ming Dynasty craftsmanship. The curved arms, beautiful crest rail, and intricately carved back splat are gorgeous. It is made from solid wood, possibly elm or rosewood. Handcrafted using traditional mortise and tenon joinery (no nails), it reflects the exceptional artistry of early Chinese furniture-making. While we no longer have any documentation about the origin of this piece, it was likely made in late 19th century or early 20th century. It is in very good condition, with a beautiful natural wood grain and original patina. There is a small loose piece under the left arm, not visible and repairable. It is in need of some cleaning but the end result will be a collectors item. Asking $500 obo. Comparable chairs on eBay can go upwards of $1,000. Available for local pickup or delivery within Philadelphia. Message for more details or additional photos!
