Late-1960s Prestige Violin Bass (Teisco/Kawai, Japan) Here’s a slice of pure late-’60s Japanese craftsmanship: a Prestige violin-shaped bass, built by Teisco/Kawai circa 1967–68. This one’s a gem! Still strung with its original flatwounds (almost unheard of after nearly 60 years!) and fresh from a professional setup by my trusted luthier/tech. For its age, it’s in great playing shape and delivers those woody, thumpy, short-scale tones you’d expect from a hollowbody violin bass. Features: • Classic sunburst finish on a fully hollow maple body • Multi-laminate short-scale maple neck w/ rosewood fingerboard & block inlays • Two lively single-coil pickups w/ 3-way selector, volume & tone controls • Original flatwound strings • Prestige headstock logo, chrome tuners, tortoise pickguard, top & back binding It’s got all the killer late-’60s Japanese vibes, equal parts collectible and playable. The only reason I’m parting with it is I’ve just picked up another bass that’s more “tour-ready,” otherwise this would stay in the arsenal.
