Description
This is a Singer Model 500A Slant-O-Matic sewing machine, serial number NC309290, made in Anderson SC, in the USA in 1961 (the "A stands Anderson). This machine is in excellent condition and was just recently totally overhauled in 2022, hasn’t been used much since. Many sellers falsely claim that the machine they ar was "serviced", but in reality, all they did was wipe off the exterior and put a few drops of mystery oil on it. When I say this machine has been means that the machine was completely disassembled (including the cam stack, foot pedal and motor), all parts completely cleaned and degreased completely degreased, cleaned, and any major chips or scratches to the painted surface are even touched up. One motor was cleaned and degreased appropriately, all the rubber pieces have been replaced with new rubber (the feet, and the bobbin winder donut, and even the rubber gromme light), the old bulb has been replaced with a bright white LED bulb which never gets hot, new felt applied under the thread spool pins, the felt bottom cover replaced (58 plus years of oil and grease accumulation can make a smelly machine). The Bakelite foot controller is also included and was also cleaned and tested. The 500A is also twin-needle and double-needle capable which allows the twin needle or two single needles side by side for two-needle sewing. This important capability allows the machine to sew two parallel stitches at a time with a consistent distance between the stitches. In addition to being zigzag capable, the 500A is externally and internally cam driven. The has seven different blind stich and multi-step zigzag patterns. Singer offered a total of 23 different cams which sew many different functional stitches and decorative patterns - all of which are primary patte well. Singer sold these other cams separately and they can be found today on eBay. These external cams are called "Fashion Discs", are made and load into the top of the machine under a space-age looking oval cover. The number 1 Fashion Disc is included in the machine and cams 2-in the accessory box. To sew with them, you open the top cover which gives you access to the bobbin winder and the cam chamber, and the pins automatically pop up like rockets on a launch pad. The underside of the oval cover has a chart with all the stich pattern information for qu while you sew - very NASA-like. The machine comes with an accessory box including a copy of the original owner's manual which will tell you how to operate.
