Description

Burnett Boston Antique 1900s Amber Glass Medicinal Extract Bottle, 4.5” Pristine vintage condition - no signs of use, defects or damages No top Pictures are part of the description, please check them & let me know if you require additional ones. History & interesting facts: * Joseph Burnett was a prominent Boston druggist and chemist. He established an apothecary and later a manufacturing business in Boston during the mid-1800s. * Burnett's company also produced a variety of other "Standard Preparations" including medicinal products, toiletries, perfumes, and even a hair product called "Cocoaine for the Hair" (named for coconut oil, not the drug, although later the spelling changed to "Cocaine" to capitalize on public fascination). * Joseph Burnett is widely credited with being the first to commercially produce and sell liquid vanilla extract in the U.S. in 1847. This was a direct response to a lady who had lived in France and found American flavoring extracts "abominable." * Before focusing on extracts, Burnett was a partner in a chemical company (Burnett & Metcalf Chemical Co.) that manufactured and supplied the first anesthetic (diethyl ether) used in a successful painless operation by Dr. W.T.G. Morton in 1846. * Joseph Burnett was also involved in establishing Deerfoot Farms Company in Southborough, Massachusetts, in 1870, where he produced sausages and bottled milk. Deerfoot Farms became one of the earliest dairies to bottle milk and cream products in glass around 1880.
