Description
This beautiful pair of large antique “wedding baskets “, (also called “Bakul Siah”), were made in Southeast Asia and used for weddings in the Peranakan or Chinese communities. Each woven together with Rattan and Bamboo, embellished with hand painted Chinese characters about the sides and lids. These beautiful markings display one’s expression of love and wisdom. One translates, “Dragon fly Phoenix Dance”, and the other “Glory and Wealth “. These baskets were a strong tradition among the Asian community, where the family of the Groom would fill these baskets with a bevy of delicacies and gifts, then carried in a procession and presented to the Bride during the twelve-day wedding. The larger the basket the more wealth was shown. Each basket features an inner basket tier and a uniquely woven handle which spreads out where it connects to the basket itself. At the top of the handle dawns a loop, for carrying the baskets on a bamboo pole, as shown in one of the photos. Each Measures 20" in diameter x 13” tall, 30” overall In excellent antique condition with no breaks nor weakness to the woven basket itself. Structurally sound. One top loop is squished but not broken. No other issues of note. See photos for details. Sold as is Pick up only Accept cash or Zelle Thanks for looking
