Description

•Pads $5 •Rooted Pads $10 [SONORAN DESERT NATIVE] ✔️ Opuntia santa-rita is a uniquely striking cactus famous for its colorful pads that shift from soft blue-gray in the summer to a vibrant, deep purple in the winter. This dramatic color change is a response to environmental "stressors" like cooler temperatures and drought, caused by the production of a protective pigment called betalain. Flowers: The Santa Rita Prickly Pear blooms in the late spring early summer and produces a peach flower that then becomes a marble yellow, giving it a striking contrast to its purple pads. Size: The Santa Rita Prickly Pear grows at a moderate rate with new pads forming each year. It grows 4-6 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide in 3-5 years. Planting Info: The Santa Rita Prickly Pear is native to Arizona and does not require drip lines. It’s specifically native to the Tucson area, including Cochise, Greenlee, and Pima counties but also makes great yard plants if you live near Phoenix. For best odds of pads surviving in the ground you should plant in spring after frost season is over and before monsoon begins. Planting time: Wait 7-10 days for pads to callus before planting. Let them callus in a dark warm place. Do not plant if frost is expected, wait until frost season ends. Watering: Once planted, wait 7 days before watering it for the first time. It does not need to be watered again after this. Plant facts: The purple pigmentation is most notable during the winter when it turns darker to attract more sunlight. It's also a natural sunscreen for the plant. All species of prickly pear including this one are edible including its fruit. The plum sized fruit is a cultural staple used in traditional jams and candies, prized today for its sweet, watermelon-like flavor in Southwestern syrups and margaritas. [These pads were cut on 2/13/26 and are only available for a limited time since the mother plant is gone]
