Located In Bridgeton! Fruit Uses and eating information… The 'Lang' jujube variety produces large, pear-shaped fruit that is best known for drying, though it can also be eaten fresh. As they ripen, Lang jujubes transition from a crisp, green, apple-like flavor to a chewy, date-like texture with a sweeter, earthier taste. Fruit characteristics Shape: The fruits are distinctly large and pear-shaped (pyriform) with a bulbous base that tapers toward the stem. Flavor and texture: When fresh: In the yellow-green stage, the fruit has a mildly sweet and crisp taste, sometimes compared to a green apple. When dried: Lang jujubes are prized for drying. When left to ripen fully on the tree until they wrinkle and turn mahogany, the flesh becomes chewy like a date and develops a richer, caramel-like sweetness. Color: The skin starts as smooth green and progresses to yellow-green, red-brown, and finally a deep mahogany when fully ripe. Uses: While they can be eaten fresh, Lang jujubes are most commonly used for drying. Dried fruit can be enjoyed as a snack or used in baking, cooking, teas, and desserts. How to use fresh jujubes Raw as a snack Eat the fruit raw straight from the tree. Wash the fruit first, then bite around the single, central pit. The skin is edible. Add sliced jujubes to salads, oatmeal, or yogurt for extra sweetness and crunch. Cooked Stuffing: Chop and add jujubes to poultry stuffing to replace cranberries or apples. Baked dishes: Substitute jujubes for apples in baked goods like pies, crisps, and bread. They can also be baked with pork chops. Bars: Make fruit and nut bars, such as jujube butter oatmeal bars. Rice pudding: Add chopped jujubes to rice pudding for a touch of natural sweetness. Soups and stews: Chinese cuisine commonly uses jujubes in both sweet and savory dishes, such as soups with pork ribs or chicken. Chutney: Create a sweet and savory chutney to pair with crackers or a cheese board. How to preserve fresh jujubes Dried Drying fresh jujubes is a popular way to preserve them and enhances their sweetness. Air-dry: For jujubes that you plan to eat soon, simply leave them on the kitchen counter to dry naturally. They will self-preserve and the fruit's skin will wrinkle, but the inside will remain soft and chewy. Oven-dry: To speed up the process, you can thinly slice jujubes and bake them on a parchment-lined baking sheet at 250°F until dehydrated. Freeze: Freezing first can soften the fruits, which makes pitting them easier before drying. Use a dehydrator: Follow your dehydrator's instructions for drying fruit slices or whole, pierced jujubes. Tea Jujube ginger tea: Simmer fresh or dried jujubes, fresh ginger, and water for about an hour. Sleep aid tea: Boil fresh jujubes in water for 15 minutes to create a calming, naturally sweet beverage known to help with sleep. Canned or preserved Jam or jelly: Use pitted jujube fruit to make jam. You can boil it with sugar and water until it thickens. Candy: To candy jujubes, boil them in a sugar and water syrup, then dehydrate them for storage. Jujube butter: Use fresh jujubes in place of apples to make a spiced fruit butter. n
