Each cow has different hand painted pattern design Per internet: This is an Akabeko, a traditional Japanese folk toy. It is a talisman of good fortune and health, originating from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The name translates to "red cow" in the local dialect. The toy is typically handmade from papier-mâché, with a hollow body and a bobbing head suspended by a string. Legend says the red color helps ward off smallpox and other illnesses.
