Description
Works with 2” receivers and those dainty 1-1/4” receivers as well. 100% functional. Vintage? Maybe…very likely from Thule’s very own R&D shop, this predecessor to the modern Apex & Helium racks uses twice the steel and half the technology. It would be my go-to rack if hauling a couple 70 pound e-bikes. Or if I needed a bike rack to go on any of the Mad Max movie vehicles. Q: does it have a lock? A: no, for two reasons 1) the lock had not been invented when this rack was cobbled together by an early Thule blacksmith and 2) the sheer weight of this rack prevents theft. Q: does it have a tool-less anti-rattle mechanism? A: no - you’re going to need a 19mm wrench or socket to tighten this thing on to your rig. Q: is that rust on the rack? A: it’s called patina, and gives it character. Also - once the rust reaches the right thickness, it becomes the protective layer and can’t rust anymore. Q: does the rack have anti-sway attachments for the bikes? A: no, these were misplaced during the Regan administration. Nothing a bungee won’t take care of. Note - one photo shows an anti-sway part from a Thule Helium Pro rack on there. If anti-sway is your thing, these aren’t an exact fit but would work and are $10 on the Thule website. Consider calling Thule and with the help of an associate and carbon dating, you may be able to identify the name of this rack and get you the correct anti-sway part. Q: will you take $25 for it? A: no, what’s wrong with you? This thing is built with steel that would scrap at $50 value.
