These 6 chairs are just over 50 years old. The set was used on special occasions and with company over those years. This is a very well built set, all wood, extremely sturdy. Originally, there were cane backs. When the set underwent professional recovering, the cane backs were covered with a tufted, pillow-like covering for greater comfort. However, as you can see from pictures, there is no damage to the original cane backings & the upholstered back can be easily removed by simply removing the tufting buttons. If you look closely you will see that the chair wood and cushions are in excellent shape for being as old as they are. There are no broken or cracked wood pieces in any of the chairs. There is no breakdown of the cushions. For someone who likes to do DIY projects, the top of the chairs could undergo a little work to change the look & a lighter, more modern material would make cushions stand out. I am sad to let go of these, but my living situation has changed & I am down-sizing.
