The 2003 American Silver Eagle bullion coin—sometimes referred to as the 2003 American Eagle Silver Dollar—was struck in .9993 fine silver. It measures 40.6mm in diameter and weighs 1 ounce (31.10g). Also issued that year was the 2003 Proof Silver Eagle, a handsome coin featuring a beautiful cameo finish. Encapsulated by the Mint in a protective plastic covering, the 2003 Proof Silver Eagle was intended to be purchased as a collectible coin, and not generally circulated. The front face of the 2003 Silver Eagle bears the image of "Walking Liberty" by American sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. The reverse image is based on the Great Seal of the United States and shows a bald eagle in a heraldic pose, accompanied by a shield, banner, olive branch and sheaf of arrows. Like all other Silver Eagles, 2003 Silver American Eagles are guaranteed by the U.S. Government for weight, content and purity.
