Description

This is a moderately circulated, “One Kwacha” note from the “Republic of Malawi” in southeastern Africa. It is dated January 31 1976 It pictures Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda who was Malawi’s first “President” and a key figure in its independence movement. Born around 1898, he studied medicine abroad before leading the fight against colonial rule. He became “Prime Minister” in 1963 and “President” when Malawi became a Republic in 1966. Over time, he declared Malawi a one-party state and later named himself “President for Life”. His rule brought economic growth but was also marked by political repression. In 1993, under pressure, he allowed multiparty elections and lost in 1994. He passed away in 1997.
