Description
⚠️ Due to security and increased theft concerns, we only mail items at this time. If you are in the NJ-PA-NY area, come see our booth at Days of Olde Antiques & Collectibles in Galloway, NJ.! This small "half cylinder" shaped Shibukusa-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) features green and red geometric motifs depicted with flowers. Made by master potter Shibukusa Ryūzō [渋草柳造], this bowl comes in its original tomobako (wooden paulownia box) and cleaning towel. The inscription on the outer indicates "nodate" [野点碗] and the inner reads the artisan name/kiln, though I believe it is a 5th generation. One of Japan's younger pottery traditions, Shibukusa-yaki [渋草焼] began in 1841 when the 21st Gundai of Takayama in Hida invited potters from the nearby Seto and Kutani regions to produce pottery for his new studio kiln. The influence of Kutani-yaki can be seen in the vibrant geometric patterns and bold imagery. Condition: Excellent condition, like new. Original pawlonia box, signed by Shibikusa kiln and cleaning towel included.
