2002 BMW 540i

2002 BMW 540i Touring Sterling Grey Metallic/Grey leather interior Sport Package 131k miles VIN - WBADR634X2GN92197 Exterior: The exterior shows very well for its age. The paint cleans up nicely and does not have any clear coat peeling. Some typical rock chips, minor scratches and does have a dent on the rear driver door. I do believe a PDR guy could take this out without much trouble. There is also a crack on the lower front bumper and some larger scratches there. The shadowline trim looks great and is in mostly good shape. Any defects are in the photo album. The car has 17 inch Style 32 wheels with 235/45 Continental tires (2015 date codes). The wheels are showing age and could benefit from a refinish paired with a new set of tires. The car is very solid for an E39 with only a few bubbles of rust on the corner of the rocker, slight bubbling in the gas cap area and surface rusting near one of the jack points. I tried to picture these as best as I can. Interior: The grey sport interior has held up well for being a lighter color. There are no rips in the leather and only minor wear on the driver bolster. The sport steering wheel in a good shape. There is some light staining here and there as to be expected being a lighter color. The headliner has some spots on it. When I purchased the car, the sunroof drains were clogged and the carpet was damp. I have cleaned the carpets to the best of my ability but there still is a light musty smell. I have put air through the drains out and it seems to be much better. It has been through a rain since and has not leaked. I would keep an eye on it to make sure the issue is resolved. The interior could use a true deep clean with a proper machine. The front windows, seats, AC, Heat, and sunroof, and hatch work as they should. The rear windows need regulators (motors are working) and the radio does not work. I am assuming its the head unit itself as I have tried a new amp with no success. Mechanical: The car drives, stops and is smooth on the highway. There are no lights on the dash. I do not have any receipts of the timing chain/guides being completed but do not hear any start-up noise. I have replaced the timing chain tensioner as a precautionary measure as well as a recent oil change. Once the car is warm there is a slight diesel sound which is a typical symptom of the VANOS seal/ring though I have not done any in-depth diagnosing. The valve covers are weeping oil as well as the power steering. Otherwise, the car feels very solid during my recent drives. Overall this is a great drivers example of an E39 540iT.
