The Mood Ring (also called Sensitivity or Impulse Ring) was the fad in the Summer of 1975. Its extreme popularity was indicative of the self-seeking, “me decade” of the 70’s when Americans embraced individualism. Invented by Joshua Reynolds, heir to R.J. Reynolds’ Tobacco fortune, this piece of jewelry, by changing colors, was believed to reflect the wearer’s moods and emotional state. According to advertising, the ring changes from black to bright blue depending on the mood of the wearer. It could determine whether he / she were tense, nervous, happy etc. The ring actually possessed a heat-sensitive liquid crystal that, based on the temperature of the finger, changed the color of the “stone.” Many celebrities, such as Barbra Streisand, professed the validity of the rings. The rings changed colors for about a year. This Mood Ring is original, not a reproduction. It is oval shaped with silver tone (probably bronze.) It appears to change colors slightly, but certainly not to the degree as it did in the 70’s. No drastic changes and I am not even sure if the slight change can be attributed to a light source reflected on the “stone.” Seems to be stuck at a grayish/black tone.
