GE GeoSpring is a hybrid water heater that combines electric and heat pump technologies for ultra-efficient water heating.  The GeoSpring is a free-standing 50 gallon water heater. This unit operates like a refrigerator in reverse, transferring heat out of the surrounding air into the water and expelling cool air. When compared to a traditional 50-gallon electric water heater, this heat pump unit provides more hot water for much less money. 50 gallon heat pump water heaters typically cost almost $2000 in today's market. GE manufactured this unit in 2011 and it turned out the first units had a known problem with the coils. Replacement coils were covered under warranty, but not the installation. GE sent me new coils and evaporator, which are still new in the box and never installed. Have been using this until now in conventional mode (has a backup resistive element like a regular water heater). This is the perfect opportunity for an HVAC pro to pick up a $2,000 unit for next to nothing, since such a person would have all the tools such as vacuum pump, recovery tank brazing tools, etc, to install the new coils and allow the unit to also operate in the super-efficient heat pump mode once again.
