Description
This elegant bone china creamer pitcher, crafted by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons at Etruria & Barlaston, England, was produced exclusively for Boston retailer Shreve, Crump & Low Co. around 1940 as a patriotic tribute to the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides"). The classic ovoid form with high-loop handle and fine gold banding stands about 6.5 inches tall, featuring detailed black transfer prints: one side illustrates the iconic 44-gun frigate under full sail amid waves, inscribed "U.S. Constitution"; the opposite displays the heraldic US naval eagle grasping crossed anchors and cannon barrels over a shield. The base bears an engraved narrative: "Old Ironsides launched October 21, 1797... She was conceived in patriotism... Gloriously has she shown her valor" (from Oliver Wendell Holmes' poem), plus full Wedgwood, Etruria, and Shreve marks. Condition is superb—pristine gloss, no chips, cracks, crazing, or gilding loss; ready for display or light use. Hoist anchor to 1797 glory with this Wedgwood gem—a 6.5" bone china creamer where "Old Ironsides" sails bold against stormy seas, her eagle sentinel guarding the helm. Crafted for Boston's Shreve Crump & Low, inscribed with Holmes' rousing verse. Pristine patriotic porcelain, perfect for maritime mantels or morning maritime!
