Description

Aug 18th 1944 Dear Mom # 185  No work tonight so I'll dash off a little of everything. 1st A few days ago I mentioned mailing some papers to you. They were for Aug 3 - 10 less the 4th. I don't know what happened to the 4th. The 3rd of Aug contains one of Churchill's speeches + he sure can sling the language around. The 9th day of Aug has an article by a Don Addington about the U.S. A few more writers like him and the British certainly wouldn't like the Americans. He does dish out the bank that reflects somewhat on the U.S. Also included a copy of the CCH and a De Paulia  In my language lessons I've picked up a suitable phrase for Roberta. Does she still say " W huggis"?  "What's this?" = " Qu' est-ce que ceci?"   now for the perfect pen. Da Ferret as you may recall is a small animal of the weasel family. It is used in hunting rabbits over here. It's use is illegal in the States. It goes down the holes and chases out the rabbits. Some of the fellows visit a family in town wo use ferrets for hunting. " The ferret is to look most searchingly for something". So, to get the point. In accounting, the vouchers have to be added and balanced off before the totals are entered on the books. One class of vouchers invariably has an addition on it. The amount paid plus the amount held back for expenses equals the amount disbursed. Often the totals of vouchers for the day will not balance because several individual vouchers are added incorrectly. So then the accountant and I have to plod our way through each of a couple hundred one by one to find the error. Ted, the accountant - (under-rated accountant - not the name - only one) is a very likeable easy going fellow - and quite accurate. So he smiles and eventually finds the several errors.  So the pun - the master piece - The balance did not come even after we caught several of the insidious? errors. So as Ted took the vouchers in hand grimaced in his own quaint way. the inspiration hit me. Says J - " Grin and ferret, Ted my boy, Grin and ferret" For the sake of those who require explanation -(#2 page 185) the phrase is a take off from "Grin and bear it". Perhaps one reason I like Ted as much as I do is that he acts as though he appreciates my humor. He is the New Yorker in the outfit. He'd be a five fellow even if he didn't like my humor.  Now I have #67 (letter) before me - dated 4 Aug - Arrived Aug 14 you received a V-mail in a week. Also received allotment. Packages of July 5 + 7 or thereabouts arrived. Thanks a lot. All that remains is a maple leaf or two and the Kleenex. Very good. Note the brand name of the candy.  Don't send any possible perishables. Walt, from Milwaukee, received a cake in a month's time. You could smell the mold 10 feet away.  Open aunt M's package today - Friday. This way I get double benefit from it. I received it Sunday and you might say receive it today when I opened it. It contained quite a bit of Kleenex and some fine hard candy. Then at noon several fellows got packages so we have plenty of candy.  The recipe for coffee from rainwater sounds unique but we don't need to resort to that here yet. Seems all the neighbors follow MM Cues? formula of praising the children to make a hit with the relatives. Remember his angle. I supposed he talked the proverbial arm and leg off on his recent visit. Now # 67 page 2. Too bad Henry's acquaintance Cheg Paree aren't handing out the promotions over here. I don't have the magic formula required in this outfit. I recall the fellows well- all five fellows. Glad to hear they had an enjoyable time. I'll bet H doesnt have a moment to himself now. He'll probably encounter a lot of the half - witted staff that seems to be every day bread and butter of the higher paid boys.  His latest address came. I hope to use it soon. The latest second hand news flash tells us that General Patton's army has all by itself captured...... (LETTER ENDS)    Pickup in James Island near folly beach or shipping is turned on. Comes in a protector sleeve and backing board.
