Description

Up for sale, a 1979 Greco Super Sound model SE800 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtags. This guitar boasts fully upgraded electronics with USA-made components in the wiring harness and USA Fender American Vintage black bobbin 57/62 single coil pickups. The predecessor of the Fender Japan JV Strats, the "Super Sound" models were at the very top of Greco's Strat range in '79, made in Japan at the famed Fujigen factory in the years prior to Fujigen Gakki signing their deal with Fender. As such, this guitar is an amalgam of Pre-CBS Fender features, with a substantial V neck profile, rosewood fretboard, and an alder body. The guitar features a trio of upgraded Fender USA-made American VIntage 57/62 black bobbin alnico magnet single coils, and via the five-way selector switch the guitar offers cutting bridge pickup sparkle, and neck pickup bell-like chime and sweetness. The guitar weighs 8lbs 9oz, and has been professionally setup with 10-46 strings, spot-on intonation, and slinky action. The maple neck has a deep V-shaped profile carve, measuring .880” deep at the 1st fret and .990” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard is a dark, tight-grained cut with lightly rolled fretboard edges, dot inlay, and original slender fretwire. The frets retain their full factory height with well-rounded crowns, showing virtually no wear. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. This Greco adheres to traditional Fender spec with a 7 1/4" fretboard radius, 25 1/2" scale length, and a 42.5mm nut width (just fractionally shy of 1 11/16"). On the small early '60s-style headstock, the original Greco Deluxe Kluson-style double line tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly. The B79-prefix serial number on the four-bolt neck plate translates to February of 1979. The electronics are fully upgraded with Fender's American Vintage 57/62 black bobbin pickups, USA-made 250k CTS pots, a five-way switch, and a Sprague Orange Drop tone cap. The pickup routes are untouched, and there are two small areas of the control cavity that have been slightly deepened. The underside of the pickguard has also been professionally shielded for the lowest possible noise floor. The plastics are extremely clean, with original black knobs and three-ply pickguard which shows just a bit of faint pick scuffing. Hardware includes the '70s-style bridge with block saddles, and the nickel plating shows light surface patina. The vibrato actuates smoothly, complete with a properly threaded arm with a black tip. The gloss body finish is a pitch perfect shade of Olympic White, with no aging of the clear coat beyond the factory color. Cosmetic wear is limited to just a few faint finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. The satin finish on the neck profile is nigh flawless. The original black tolex hardshell case is included, equally as clean as the guitar. The original hangtags are also present.
