Description

Pair of polished bronze plated metal lion bookends. Signed: “Antonio Canova. 1(contact info removed).” Beautiful patina.
These lions were originally sculpted by Antonio Canova (Italian, 1(contact info removed)) in larger scale for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica. The Sleeping lion pictured is symbolic of the Pope’s moderation; the vigilant lion represents his energetic work. Incredible pieces that complement neoclassical decor and Hollywood Regency styles. 
Beautifully crafted and minimal, yet full of opulence in detail.
