I’ve been making these for several years now and it’s a game changer for plant enthusiasts! Expanded clay aggregate aka LECA is used for hydroponic/aquaponic systems and is an excellent middle ground between rooting cuttings in water and planting them in soil. The roots grow strong and fast in the LECA. You can keep plants long term in the LECA or you can plant once the roots are developed and then start another cutting. As long as there is even a little water at the bottom, the clay transfers the moisture up to all the roots. This means you only have to check the plant once a month or so and simply add water. This set up works especially well if you have rainwater or a water conditioner for freshwater. Chlorine in tap water dissipates quickly but chloramines (a more stable chlorine compound) remain, which can harm plants and stunt growth. If you’ve been having trouble with your plants that could be why! You can absolutely still use tap water for these—I just also recommend water treatment if you really want your plants to thrive.
