Each conga drum in the California Series was hand-crafted under the guidance and direction of renowned conga master builder Akbar Moghaddam, who had previously worked with Tom Flores at Valje Drums. The California Series followed a meticulous and time-consuming build process that set it apart from the mass produced lines of conga drums by Gon Bops and others. The build process included: Use of quarter-sawn single stave solid Appalachian Red Oak, with each stave cut and bent by hand. Steel rings were hammered into place, and the staves were allowed to cure for an extended period of months. The shells were hand-glued using improved modern glue and the shells were hammered into their classic shape before turning them. The shells were sanded to a soft finish after nearly an entire year of construction and curing. This series of drums have long been discontinued and are difficult to find.
