Description

For sale is a very cool 1928-C $5 Silver Certificate "Mule" Note. The Red Seal Notes are called "United States Notes" because they are currency that was actually issued by the United States and not the Federal Reserve, which is technically a separate entity. So any Red Seal Note was actually issued from the U.S. fiscal budget and not on loan from the Federal Reserve. Red Seal Notes are always fairly scarce because the Treasury would destroy these notes as they made they way back. People are very used to the common 1953 & 1963 Red Seal notes, but this 1928 version is much more scarce in that it was the very first small Red Seal Note, and the design is different than the 53 & 63's in that the red seal is on the the left side vs. the right. Older Red Seal Notes like this one are always nice to have, but what puts this one over the top is it is a Mule Note, which is a more rare variety of Notes spanning back to when currency was first printed. Mule notes basically are notes where the plates used for printing the front and back of notes are mismatched. When they print currency just about the entire batches use the same plates for the front and back. But sometimes they have to change a plate for many reasons, such as damage to the plate, etc. When this happens the mismatched batches are called Mule Notes. With this particular note the plate on the back of the note should have a number of 288 and below. Any with plate numbers of 289 or below are Mule Notes. The plate number on the back of this note is 907, thus making it a Mule Note. As you can see from the pics this certificate is in good condition, and would be considered average circulated. The red colors on the front and deep greens on the reverse are still very vibrant. The note has folds to it, but it has no rips, tears, or major stains. This is a great rare note to add to to any currency collection. Please email me with questions or interest. Thanks!
