Description

Identification • Figure: Eagle (Kwahu) Kachina — symbolizing strength, power, and a messenger between the spiritual and human worlds. • Features: • Wide-spread eagle wings with detailed feather painting. • Carved beak, turquoise-painted face, beaded earrings & necklace. • Traditional kilt and moccasins, jingles on the knees, fur topknot. • Base inscription: “H. Shelton, Oraibi, Ariz.” with an arrow motif. • This identifies the carver as Hopi artist H. Shelton, from Oraibi (Old Oraibi), Arizona, one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in North America. See my other listings of Kachinas. Can sell as a collection. Open to offers ⸻ Artist & Collectibility • Oraibi carvers are known for high-quality, traditional work. • H. Shelton is a documented Hopi surname; several carvers in that family line are represented in Native arts circles. • Having the artist’s name, place, and mark adds authenticity and value compared to unsigned or tourist-market dolls. ⸻ Value Considerations 1. Named carver → More collectible than anonymous contemporary pieces. 2. Quality → Very fine wing detail, beadwork, and overall symmetry indicate skilled craftsmanship. 3. Condition → Appears excellent (no major feather loss or cracks visible). 4. Size → Sun Kachina measures 15 inches tall x 16 inches wide 5. Market → Hopi Eagle Kachinas are highly desirable among collectors, especially signed ones. If further research confirms “H. Shelton” as part of a known carving family with established auction records, the upper range could be higher (approaching $1,000 for exceptional pieces). Please see my other listings of Kachinas.
