Description
Model: Stanley Bailey No. 3C (Smoothing Plane with Corrugated Sole). 2. Era: The combination of the U.S. PAT. APR. 19-10 date cast into the bed and the STANLEY MADE IN U.S.A. mark on the iron places this plane in a highly desirable era for users and collectors: • It is likely a Type 12 (1919–1924) or Type 13/14 (1925–1930). • The "MADE IN U.S.A." stamp on the iron (without the heart/SW logo) suggests it is post-1935, placing the iron itself in the Type 16 (1933–1941) or later period. However, since the plane has multiple irons and parts, the iron with the visible stamp may be a replacement. • The "U.S. PAT. APR. 19-10" casting is most closely associated with the Type 11 (1(contact info removed)) and Type 12 (1(contact info removed)) eras. Conclusion on Age: The body of the plane (with the patent date) dates to the 1910s or 1920s, which is often considered the high point for quality manufacturing in Stanley bench planes. The "MADE IN U.S.A." iron is slightly later, but still a vintage, high-quality part. This is an excellent tool for a woodworker. After a thorough cleaning and sharpening, it would be a top-performing smoother, well-suited for fine work where its small size makes it maneuverable and comfortable.
