Description
Magnificent French ormolu jewelry casket dating to the Napoleon III period, circa 1870. This fine piece exemplifies the Etruscan Revival style of the Second Empire, featuring richly gilded bronze with champlevé enamel in geometric and floral patterns, accented in shades of blue, green, red, and white. The lid is inset with an oval beveled glass window, allowing a glimpse of the deep crimson velvet interior. The ormolu retains its original warm patina, adding character and authenticity. The box stands gracefully on four sculpted figural feet, each detailed in the classical taste of mid-19th-century French decorative arts. These caskets were prized by the French bourgeoisie and aristocracy, often displayed on dressing tables to hold jewelry, perfume bottles, or cherished keepsakes. Collectors of French ormolu and Second Empire decorative arts highly value such pieces for their masterful craftsmanship, vibrant enamel work, and historical significance—true expressions of the opulence and refinement of Napoleon III–era France. Condition Excellent antique condition with age-appropriate patina to the ormolu surface. Interior velvet shows light wear and fading from age. Beveled glass top is clear and intact. Enamel work remains vibrant with minimal loss. Hinges and clasp operate smoothly. Measure approximately 5’ tall 10’ across and 8’ depth
