Description
- Provenance: original artwork signed “K. K. 1946” - Media: oil on wood panel - Artwork Dimensions: 16”h x 12"v - Frame Dimensions: 19 1/4"h x 15 1/2"v - Condition: very good… This work was originally in the possession of the family Rothstein, which immigrated to the United States from Kaufbeuren, Germany after the Second World War, and represents regional artistic traditions of Impressionist Realism popular in the Allgäu region of Bavaria at the time. The winter of ‘46 was especially harsh as Bavarians had to cope with the rebuilding of their country, the reevaluation of their outlook on life, and their position in global society. An inward turn to realism and insularity, a quiet, rural, but cold and bleak winter scene was premoniscient of the years to come. The baren and twisted tree, and broken fence almost suggest the decay of society and the violation of boundaries both personal and political. Typical of impressionist tendencies, the technique is bold and deliberate, somewhat crude but effective in rendering a crisp and emotive image. The composition is well orchestrated, and recalls the southward approach, when after miles of flat and fertile farm land, the traveler is suddenly faced with a thousand-foot wall of calcium carbonate better known as Wetterstein Limestone.
