As the son of another accomplished German-American artist, Paul Weber, he received extensive training in both the United States and Europe. The younger Weber was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania shortly after his family emigrated from Germany. In the 1860s, Paul Weber moved back to Germany to take an official artistic post, and Carl went with him. To develop his skills, the younger Weber studied in the major art centers of Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Paris. This gave him a strong foundation in German academic painting. Weber returned to Philadelphia circa 1874 where he would live and work until his death. Favoring intimate depictions of rural Pennsylvania, as well as bucolic scenes of livestock and tranquil river landscapes, Weber’s work is representative of a strong influence from the French Barbizon style preferring plein air painting in order to capture landscapes with accuracy and spontaneity. He brought a sense of focus and vividness to his work by juxtaposing a striking contrast of bright color and earthy tones to create a sense of mood and drama. Carl Weber was a prolific and successful painter who exhibited his work at prominent venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Art Club, and the National Academy of Design in New York. He received several awards, including a Gold Medal from the American Art Association in 1902 for his watercolor work and honorable mentions at the World’s Columbian Exposition and the Atlanta Exposition.
