Oaxacan Decorative Brown Heart Clay

Expertly crafted in Oaxaca, Mexico this brown clay ceramic pottery is made in the area of San Bartolo De Coyotepec, and the special properties of this region's clay cannot be found anywhere else. “Barro Negro” literally translated as "black mud" pottery is one of several very unique finds in Oaxaca. The polished, almost glass-like surface, intricate carving, and fine details make black clay and brown clay pottery a treasure to display. Each piece is produced and cut by hand and baked in a fire of thick black smoke to produce the unique color. Meticulous care and patience are put into each black clay piece, as they take around twenty days to complete. This version requires a special process to allow oxygen to interact during the baking process at a specific interval to change the appearance of the clay from black to brown.
