Pitch pine (Pinus rigida) is a resilient, evergreen conifer native to eastern North America, known for its ability to thrive in harsh, sandy, and fire-prone environments. It is characterized by its irregular, often twisted form, thick reddish-brown bark, and stiff, yellow-green needles in bundles of three. A key adaptation is its ability to resprout from epicormic shoots after fire, making it a pioneer species on poor sites and a stable climax species on harsher ones. This tree was collected 8 years ago in NJ.
