Description
The inscriptions on the two figures are "天下大將軍" (Cheonha-daejanggun) and "地下女將軍" (Jiha-yeojanggun), which translate to "Great General under the Heavens" and "Female General of the Underworld," respectively. These figures are a type of Korean totem pole known as Jangseung (장승). They were traditionally placed at the entrances of villages to frighten away evil spirits and to mark village boundaries. The male totem, Cheonha-daejanggun, and the female totem, Jiha-yeojanggun, are typically found as a pair. While the inscriptions use Hanja (Chinese characters adapted into the Korean language), they are a distinct and important part of Korean folk culture. They are both in great condition for being vintage pieces though Jiha-yeojanggun is missing her sash on the back of her head as can be seen in the photos, but otherwise they are still very vibrant characters and would faithfully protect your home from evil spirits!
