Description
A circa 1980's Maitland-Smith Carlton House desk in genuine tessellated animal horn with its matching chair. Most Maitland-Smith desks you will find are stone or wood and sold without the matching chair. Real horn is much harder to come by, and finding the desk with its chair is rarer still. Each small horn tile was cut, fitted, and laid by hand over a solid wood frame, with a warmth and depth that photographs do not adequately capture. Brass inlay runs around the top and back, cast brass drop pulls throughout, brass sabots on the feet. The horn covers the entire desk, including the back, so it can sit in the middle of a room and still look finished from every side. Storage is on two levels: four small drawers in the center with a cabinet door on either side and two flip up compartments above, three solid wood drawers below. The desk was never put into use, and the chair's original seat cushion is perfect, which is unusual for a set this age. Two age related notes, neither structural. Several horn pieces have separated from the chair's legs and need reattaching; many of the detached pieces are included. Two desk legs are missing tiny trim pieces at the bottom, which are only noticeable upon close examination. See photos. Dimensions Desk: 51.25"W x 29"D x 38"H. Writing surface 32"W x 17.5"D at 30"H. Knee clearance 25"H. Chair: 20"W x 23"D x 35"H. Seat 18"W x 16"D at 18"H. Maitland-Smith has built furniture this way since 1979: 18th century English forms made up in horn, brass and shagreen, and constructed by hand. This is a strong example of their work. Cash on pickup. The desk is very heavy, so please bring help and a vehicle that will carry both pieces.
