Key Historical Milestones: 1878 (Discovery): Local men dug into the sinkhole, descended by rope and candle, and uncovered the massive subterranean chambers. 1880–1881 (Legal Dispute): The original discoverers quickly purchased the tax-defaulted land from owner Samuel Buracker without disclosing the find, triggering a famous Virginia Supreme Court fraud ruling that returned the property to the original owner's creditors. Luray Caverns 2Early Electrical & AC Milestones: In the late 19th century, the cave became one of the first in the U.S. to be lit by electricity.
