Description

Chinautla Primitives are hand-molded pottery pieces made by the Pocoman Indian women in the mountains of Central America. Production of pottery from the village of Chinautla dates from the first century B.C. Each piece is carefully formed, polished by hand, dried in the sun, and flash fired with straw in the manner of the early Chinese dynasties. The skill is passed from mother to daughter and is usually confined to one or two styles per family. They truly use their imaginations as they develop pottery of all sizes and descriptions. The distinctive black marks are carbon coloring fused into the clay during firing. No two flash fire marks are the same- making the items avidly sought by collectors. Alas, it is a dying art; Chinautla is the last village in Central America to create exclusively by hand. Terra cotta is not ceramic, nor is it fired in a kiln. It is NOT WATERPROOF OR BAKE PROOF. It is an art form and a one of a kind creation. We hope you enjoy this original work of art.!!! * ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO HOLDS, RETURNS, REFUNDS, TRADES OR EXCHANGES * Dimensions: 7” H
