HUGE Vintage scrimshaw Elk Horn Pipe Handmade By Dennie Ibbotson Laughing Sun What you have here is a ONE OF A KIND, very LARGE ( 1 foot in length ) Vintage Elk Horn Pipe, Hand Made by Artist Dennie Ibbotson of ‘Laughing Sun’ who carves all of the large State Signs (and other signs as well) for the State of Colorado, as well as Large Custom Carved Doors and other Commissioned Design and Wood Carving work ~ I spoke with the artist to confirm that he did in fact carve this pipe before his foray into signs and doors, he told me the entire story of how he started his carving work with these Pipes in the 1970s when he would bring truck loads of Elk horns from Colorado down to Texas and hand whittle them, then move on to create and HAND SCRIMSHAW the artwork onto these pipes, by request and commission only, for upwards of $3,000 a piece, back in the ‘70s ~ because of the nature of the scrimshaw detailing artistry work, which Dennie described to me as ‘Tattooing onto bone’, repeatedly, in various sessions to create the everlasting desired effect, each pipe would take him between 2 - 4 days to make from start to finish.
