All the Jack Spade stores were permanently closed in January 2015 following Kate Spade's acquisition by Tapestry (formerly the Coach Group) along with Kate Spade Saturday. Andrew Spade is a fashion designer who co-founded Kate Spade and Jack Spade. Born in Birmingham, Michigan, he attended Arizona State University, where he met fellow future-fashion designer Katherine Brosnahan. Together, they launched the handbag design company Kate Spade in 1993. The couple married the next year. Jack Spade was a menswear line created by Kate Spade that offered men's leather goods and accessories, but that also closed in 2015. In 1999, Spade sold a 56% stake in her business to Neiman Marcus Group, helping to expand the brand worldwide. In 2004, "Kate Spade at Home" was launched as a home-collection brand. After all, this is a company founded upon the idea of the bag as panacea. Like its sibling brand Kate Spade, Jack Spade — founded by Andy, Kate’s husband — began life known primarily as a bag-maker, contending that there’s nothing in your life that couldn’t benefit from a little control. Jack Spade is a fictional character, and also something of a ghost: the company is no longer owned by the family Spade. (Andy can be found at the ephemera shop Partners & Spade. The Jack Spade brand is now owned by Liz Claiborne.) But its commitment to casual rigor remains. Bags dot two walls of this store — one of a pair in Manhattan (the other is in SoHo) — messenger bags, backpacks, tote bags and more. They’re almost perfect, and deliberately so: Jack Spade is a brand for would-be would-be’s, which you wear to let others know that while you don’t come from privilege, and you don’t wish to appear as if you do, you wish to let people know that you could play the role if you wanted, which you do not. JACK SPADE NEW YORK was founded in 1996 in a loft on Warren Street in NYC with the idea that useful items could be both utilitarian & stylish.
