Minnesota History - Vintage Veteran American Legion Society of 40 Men 8 Horses Garrison Cap & Medal. Locale Number 45 Minnesota. Size 7 1/4". Made of blue-gray wool with navy blue piping. The numbers 40/8 are embroidered in red on one side and 45 MINN on the other. The medal is bronze-colored and engraved with railroad cars, 2 men and a horse, and attached by a light blue ribbon. Dimensions: 6" h 4" w 11" d. Manufactured by United Hatters, Cap and Millinery Workers International Union. The organization was formed after WWI. The 40/8 stands for the French boxcars that were used to transport American troops around France during World War I. The boxcars could hold either 40 men or 8 horses.
