Description

Sericho 3.64 grams Sericho 4.00 grams Sericho 4.26 grams Sericho 5.15 grams Sericho 5.30 grams Sericho 6.49 grams Name: Sericho Group/Classification: Pallasite Date of Find: 2016 Observed Fall: No Location Found: Near the town of Habaswein, Kenya Location GPS: 1°5’41.16"N, 39°6’8.30"E Total Known Weight/Mass: Estimated at 2.8 tons Meteorites are rocks from space (nickel-iron or stony-iron or a combination of the two) that date from the formation of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago. They are larger chucks of primordial material that survived their entry through the Earth's atmosphere and are sometimes observed as bright fireballs and produce a loud sonic boom.  Shooting stars (or meteors) that are seen during meteor showers are much smaller particles and usually disintegrate from friction in the atmosphere before they reach the ground.  Meteorites are billions of years older than any terrestrial (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) rocks that are native to the Earth's formation. Some meteorites have even been proven through detailed chemical analysis to originate from the Moon, Mars and asteroids (namely Vesta) in the asteroid belt located between Jupiter and Mars. Others have just been hurtling though our solar system since the time that the planets formed and have finally found their way to Earth. Pallasites formed at asteroid mantle-core boundaries approximately 4.5 billion years ago when our solar system formed.  As the asteroid slowly cooled after multiple impacts, Olivine crystallized within the molten Iron-Nickel metal core and solidified until a later impact shattered the asteroid and sent fragments on their way to Earth. 1cm scale cube and digital scale not included in sale.
