Description
Dioptase is a vibrant emerald-green copper silicate mineral known for its intense color and vitreous luster. It was first discovered in the 18th century in Kazakhstan and named from the Greek words 'dia' (through) and 'optos' (visible), referring to the fact that its crystal faces can show the internal structure of the mineral. Dioptase is often found in association with other copper minerals such as malachite, azurite, and chrysocolla. High-quality dioptase specimens are prized by mineral collectors and are sometimes used as gemstones, though their relative softness makes them more suitable for display than for jewelry. The Mindouli District in the Republic of Congo is renowned for producing some of the finest dioptase specimens in the world, characterized by their deep green color and well-formed crystals.
