GROWN HERE TO PRODUCE HERE! $8 This native of the Andes in Central American provides a generous harvest of tasty tubers in the fall with a flavorful combination of watermelon apple and pear. They are very juicy and can be eaten raw or cooked. Related to the Sunflower with a similar growth habit and lovely golden yellow summer flowers. Grows 4-6' tall in full sun. Hardy in zones 7-11. Can be AAA in the north where some of the tubers can be replanted the following spring. Smallanthus sonchifolius 'Yacon' With the chill in the air , it was time to harvest the Yacon. We had au very wet spring in Seattle and so had a very late planting . Our Yacon went into the ground on June 1 2024 and were harvested on Oct 31 2024 So a mere 5 months in our ground and 100 pounds of Yacon later…. Gotta love these Tuberous beauties! A sweet treat to eat. They are known as Andes ground apples/pears. Sweet and crisp like a water chestnut. A must for anyone . We sell plants in the spring giving these plants a head start for our northern climates. $8 per plant
