Description

The history of Gerz steins is tied to the Simon Peter Gerz company, a prominent German ceramic manufacturer known for its beer steins: Founding and Early Years: Simon Peter Gerz established the company in 1857, with the production of ceramic wares commencing in 1862. Challenges and Resilience: The company faced economic difficulties, including brief cessations of production during and after World War I (1917/1918 and 1923). Post-WWII Dominance: Following World War II, Gerz significantly improved and expanded its market position, becoming a dominant player among Westerwald ceramics manufacturers. Later Years and Closure: Strategic decisions in the 1990s led to bankruptcy and partial liquidation in 1997, with manufacturing operations permanently ceasing in 1999. Legacy and Current Distribution: While manufacturing ended, the rights to the Gerz company name and trademarks were acquired by Domex Geschenk-Manufactur GmbH, which continues to distribute Gerz steins, though production is now mainly in the Orient. Markings and Authenticity: Steins made between 1949 and 1990 may be marked "Made in Western Germany," which can indicate authenticity and increase value.
