Description
Here is a one-estate owned pair of Acoustic Research AR3 speakers. They are unfinished pine and serial numbers are C37850 and C37860, likely produced around 1968. Until this summer, these lived with one owner, whose elderly daughter talked to me about how they were her late father's pride since she was a child. He had custom-built some darker wood cabinets that matched the furniture and decor, to conceal these inside. These gave the AR3s a few inches of space around each side, hence the few signs of handling on the actual speaker cabinets. More photos are available, please message for the link. Cosmetically, there are some scratches hidden on the bottom surface of each AR3 (when turned vertically with woofer on bottom), and a few light dings or scuffs on some of the other edges, as visible in photos, but nothing serious. They appear to have been physically handled very rarely. There appears to be a bit of moisture staining on the side of one of the cabinets, visible in photos as a darker area near the bottom. The grilles have some separation from the edges at a few sections visible up close. I haven't attempted to remove them due to the risk of cracking the frames or tearing the grille further. Though it's difficult to capture on photo/video, I pointed a powerful flashlight through the grilles and looked carefully all around each of the speaker components. Both tweeter domes look great, and I can't see any signs of tearing, rot or separation on the woofer surrounds. It's not very easy to film or see on video, but you can take a look here: https://offerup.com/redirect/?o=aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dWJlLmNvbS9zaG9ydHMvY0EwcGpUNmNmMWM= I recorded a 12-minute demo video testing around 20 songs with a range of genres using a mid-range 4 ohm hi-fi amp with clean power. It's filmed using my phone, so the audio won't be perfect, but it gives a good idea of how the speakers sound as they stand. https://offerup.com/redirect/?o=aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS8tekRtZ0w2WWZhVQ== The pots for Mid and Hi are turned down to the lowest setting in this video, as they don't seem to be affecting the sound much. The woofers are playing well, but the tweeters didn't initially engage despite being connected by wire. After playing for awhile, by adjusting the tweeter pots, I did get sound from the tweeter in one of the speakers for a moment and it shocked me with how clear and clean it sounded, but it was finicky and dropped out only shortly after. So the tweeters aren't audible in the video. A few possibilities as per a previous US Audio Mart seller's research: "1 - L-pads have corroded : You can try cleaning them or rebuilding / replacing. 2 - Crossover caps are bad. This quite common ( 2 caps per speaker ) 3 - Bad drivers. Most say its almost never this and that they are pretty robust Issues 1 & 2 are cheap fixes and issue 3 is rare." I haven't made any attempts to refurbish or modify these in any way because these are hard to come by at all, let alone in this shape.
