Description

- Provenance: original artwork signed “eaccon” lower right This piece was purchased in New York from Wally F Galleries (founded 1870) in the 1960s and has since been part of the Winter family collection of Accokeek, Maryland. - Media: oil on panel - Artwork Dimensions: 10 11/16”h x 8 3/4"v - Frame Dimensions: 16 1/2"h x 14 7/16"v - Condition: excellent, like new Although the artist’s signature currently remains a mystery, this bright and sunny work of twentieth century impressionism is reminiscent of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral in its muted warmth and suggestive use of color, rendering the space with such dynamism. The haziness of the brushwork carries this composition beyond photographic documentation, and represents the moment like a pleasant memory we otherwise might never have had. This classic view of the apse of The Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris from across the Seine, shows a great appreciation for architectural composition, and the aspirational offset hierarchy established by flying buttress finials, choir and the steeple, towering above the crossing. The shadow of the Archbishop’s Bridge to the left, provides a lovely contrast to the raking sun illuminating the island’s embankment.
