Description
Obviously not a 181 - offerup doesn’t have a vanagon option and forces selection Meet Big Mama, our beloved 1980 VW Vanagon camper. She’s been in our family for over 10 years and has taken us on countless adventures. But now it’s time for her next chapter with a new owner who’s ready to keep the journey going. 1980 is the first year of the Vanagon body has the 2.0-liter, air-cooled flat-four engine. It’s an ASI Riviera conversion, not an official Westfalia. ASI was a company based in Oregon that outfitted tin-top Vanagons with a “Rivera” pop top and their own custom interiors. It’s a unique piece of camper van history. ⸻ The Good Starts right up and runs solid. Very reliable over the years. I drive it regularly. Manual Transmission - Rebuilt transmission installed by Peace Vans Seattle about 9 years ago. (A >$4500 investment) New clutch within the last 2 years. Other updates since we got it: new fuel tank, new fuel lines, Starter and muffler. Battery and Tires within the last couple years. Regular breaks checks and oil changes. The propane camp system all working (fridge and stove). The Bad It’s ready for trips and camping today, but I consider it a running project as it needs work. The mileage is unknown. The speedometer and fuel gauge are out. I use a phone app for tracking speed and mileage, and it’s worked great. Fan and heater do not work (won’t blow air or heat) and occasionally leaks exhaust into the cabin. Basically the climate system needs a redo. Bit of a hot start issue, It’ll start just takes a few more cranks than when cold. The Ugly Leaks oil like nearly all old Volkswagens. The pop top canvas is functional and doesn’t leak but the plastic is cracked in places. Small rust spots randomly on the body but undercarriage is solid. Sink pump works but leaks a bit. After market ignition. Separate key for the side door other charming quirks :) Wear and tear consistent with a 45-year-old vehicle. This van is a great starting point for someone looking to restore or continue using a classic VW camper. With a little love, Big Mama will keep rolling and making memories for years to come. If the post is up it's still available. Can only meet evenings and weekends. Asking $8,000 or best offer.
