Description

Milchen & Grossman Co. MA Matchbook Vintage c. 1948 To 1952, Unused, Unstruck Mid-century double-duty! This unused vintage matchbook pulls double shifts as an ad for Milchen Furniture Co. of Quincy, MA and Grossman Gold Nugget Coal — a pair of local New England powerhouses from the postwar boom years. Fascinating Fun Facts (for this Milchen matchbook): • Milchen Furniture Co. was a real business located at 40 Granite Street in Quincy, MA — a discount furniture dealer active through the mid-20th century. • The phrase “Out of the High Rent District” was a postwar slogan used by many warehouse retailers to advertise lower overhead = lower prices. • That all-text layout with stacked slogans reflects the era’s “saturation advertising” style — pack in as many selling points as possible on a tiny canvas. • Grossman Gold Nugget Coal was a regional fuel brand popular across New England during the 1940s–60s. Their slogan, “You’ll Know It By the Gold Nuggets,” referred to visible yellow flecks in their anthracite blend — a trademarked feature meant to signal quality. • The “President 204” phone exchange places the business in Boston or surrounding suburbs before numeric-only dialing became standard in the late 1950s. • Coal deliveries in this era were still common for home heating, and many furniture stores cross-promoted utility companies — especially when selling stoves or hearthside furnishings. • Grossman’s broader brand later expanded into building supplies, lumber, and do-it-yourself centers in the 1960s, but these early matchbooks showcase their coal-focused roots.
