Description

WWII 3"/50 Caliber Anti-Aircraft DUMMY Round WW2 Navy War World War This World War II-era 3"/50 caliber dummy round was used in training on numerous ships to practice fuse setting and loading. The fuse on this round is a dummy Mark 22 steel mechanical time fuse with number settings from 2 to 30 seconds. For instance, if I understand it correctly, if it was set to 3 it would explode 3 seconds after firing and so on. Total fuse height is 4½ inches and it weighs 2 lbs by itself. The serial number on this fuse is #328697 and it marked, "DUMMY MK 22 FUZE." The portion of the projectile underneath the fuse is solid metal and if I had to guess I would say it is lead, brass, and steel. As this dummy round is obviously inert, the portion of the cartridge that would normally be filled with a smokeless powder propellant is made of solid wood. The brass base is marked, "SHC 3" DUMMY CARTRIDGE MK 50 CAL." The entire round measure 33 inches long and weighs 24 lbs. The diameter of the base measures 4.5 inches. I set a quarter next to the round in the full length photograph to show scale. During World War II you could have found these rounds on the following types of ships: Admirable-class minesweepers, Buckley-class destroyer escorts, Cachalot-class submarines, Cannon-class destroyer escorts, Edsall-class destroyer escorts, Evarts-class destroyer escorts, Gato-class submarines, Mackerel-class submarines, Omaha-class cruisers Porpoise-class submarines, Salmon-class submarines, Sargo-class submarines, Tacoma-class frigates, Tambor-class submarines. This dummy round would make a great addition to any collection! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for reading my round.
