Description
The image is a print of the iconic photograph titled "Lunch Atop a Skyscraper". Taken on September 20, 1932, it features eleven construction workers taking a break on a steel beam 850 feet (259 meters) above the ground during the construction of the RCA Building (now the GE Building) at Rockefeller Center in New York City. The photo was a prearranged publicity stunt to promote the new skyscraper during the Great Depression. The workers, many of whom were immigrants (mostly Irish, Italian, and Mohawk ironworkers), were real construction workers who risked their lives daily. The image has become a symbol of American resilience, courage, and the fearless spirit of the working class. The men are seen casually eating lunch, chatting, and smoking without safety harnesses or protective gear, which was common practice at the time.
