Description

Framed racing art “Salvatore Scarpitta: Traveler”, which was held at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., from July 17, 2014, to January 11, 2015. About the Exhibition: • Salvatore Scarpitta (1919–2007) was an American artist known for combining sculpture, racing, and performance art. • The “Traveler” exhibit focused on his fascination with speed, race cars, and Americana, particularly through his unique work with sprint cars, like the one depicted in the poster. • The featured car is labeled “Sal Scarpitta Spl.” and was part of his fully functional race cars that were also art objects—his work often blurred the line between fine art and motorsport culture. Poster Design: • It promotes 410 Sprints, a reference to a class of high-powered dirt track sprint cars. • The design is bold and retro, mimicking vintage race posters. • The car illustration and layout were created by Bryn Freeman, printed at Dolphin Press & Print at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) in 2014.
