The 10ft cable is an official Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable, it's connection is also known as, "Mini-Display Port"; These connections are on MacBook Pros/Airs & iMacs ranging from the years/models Mid-2012 to Early-2015. Thunderbolt 3 years/models range from Early-2016 to Late-2020. You'd use a Thunderbolt enabled connection/device to access faster read & write speeds up to 10-20Gbps, which made it ideal for Thunderbolt enabled external hard drives. You can use the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) bidirectional adapter to access the contents of an older Thunderbolt 2 enabled Apple computer/device to control it using a newer Thunderbolt 3/4 enabled Apple computer OR you can use the older Thunderbolt enabled Apple computer to access the contents of & control a newer Thunderbolt 3/4 enabled Apple computer/device. It goes both ways, data going in either or both directions to best suit your purpose. All Thunderbolt enabled devices are backwards compatible, meaning you can use a Thunderbolt 1/2 device with a Thunderbolt 4 computer or a Thunderbolt 4 device with a Thunderbolt 1/2 computer. Apple still licenses brands that create TimeMachine Thunderbolt enabled back-up drives: @TB3 speeds you'd get read & write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s, @TB4 it becomes up to 40Gbps! TimeMachine back-ups would take minutes to a couple hours depending on how much data you have. Thunderbolt 3/4 enabled eGPU's to be used with Apple computers for gaming or creative projects, and with this bidirectional adapter you can use any GPU you wish with a MacBook Pro going back to a Mid-2012 (just buy a Thunderbolt 3/4 eGPU dock!)
